Hey Butter friends,
How’s everyone doing?
We are fully in spring shower mode over here — think garden soirées, brunch tables, and lots of beautiful bagel bars.
Growing up, my mom used to take my brother and me to a little bakery in our town called Daylight Donuts. The donuts were good, but the bagels were incredible. What I remember most is how they never skimped on the toppings. Every bagel was piled high with flavor, and honestly that memory still inspires how we build our bagel bars today.
For brunch gatherings, a bagel bar is one of my favorite setups because it lets every guest create their own perfect bite. Everyone gets to choose their favorite bagel, layer on as much spread as they want, and top it with whatever sounds good in the moment. And let’s be honest — that kind of choose-your-own brunch situation is always a hit.
Start with Great Bagels
The perfect bagel bar starts with really good bagels (obviously). Supporting local bakeries is always our first choice, and Kansas City has some great ones.
Some of our favorites:
-
Meshuggah Bagels – Midtown
-
The Sourdough Spot – NKC (Iron District)
-
Luca Bagels – Overland Park
So good.
Now, if you're grabbing something quick at the grocery store — we see you. Mom and I have tried just about every bagel brand under the sun, from fancy bakery brands to frozen varieties. Our surprisingly consistent winner? Walmart’s Marketside bagels. They have that chewy texture you want in a bagel and the price really can’t be beat.
The Spread Is Where the Magic Happens
You can have a great bagel, but the spread is what really makes it special.
For our bagel bars, we start with a base of Philadelphia cream cheese (or something similar) and fold in flavors to create something a little more fun and memorable.
This spring we landed on three favorites:
-
Dirty Martini (salty olive goodness)
-
Berry + Lemon (bright and slightly sweet)
-
Classic Dill (fresh, herby, and perfect with savory toppings)
Something salty, something sweet, and something fresh. Honestly, does life get much better?
And of course — no gatekeeping here. Below are the recipes so you can make them at home.

Dill Cream Cheese
Fresh, savory, and a classic bagel bar staple.
Ingredients
-
8 oz cream cheese, softened
-
2 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped
-
1 tbsp lemon juice
-
½ tsp garlic powder (or 1 small grated garlic clove)
-
½ tsp onion powder
-
¼ tsp salt
-
¼ tsp black pepper
Instructions
-
Whip cream cheese until light and smooth.
-
Mix in dill, lemon juice, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
-
Let sit for 10–15 minutes so the flavors meld.
Great with: smoked salmon, tomato, cucumber, and capers.
Butter Catering Tip
For extra fluffy cream cheese spreads, add 1–2 tablespoons of sour cream or Greek yogurt when whipping the cream cheese. It makes the spreads lighter, easier to spread, and gives them that soft, whipped look that’s perfect for a bagel bar.
Hosting Tip
If you’re new around here, here’s a little secret: hosting doesn’t have to be a big deal. Stick to simple ingredients, a good Pandora playlist, and all your favorite people — and you literally can’t go wrong. This is one of our favorite ways to keep brunch casual and fun while still feeling special.
How to Build the Perfect Bagel Bar
Once you have great bagels and a few delicious spreads, the rest of the bar is all about variety and texture. We love creating a mix of fresh, savory, and bright toppings so guests can build something that feels totally their own.
Fresh Toppings
-
Sliced cucumber
-
Tomato
-
Thinly sliced red onion
-
Avocado
-
Microgreens
-
Lemon wedges
Savory Additions
-
Smoked salmon
-
Turkey slices
-
Crispy bacon
-
Capers
A Little Something Sweet
-
Berry jam
-
Honey butter
-
Fresh berries
For styling, place toppings in small bowls and layer different heights using boards or risers so the table feels abundant and easy to navigate. Pre-slicing bagels halfway also makes it easier for guests to grab and build their plate.
A bagel bar is casual but still feels thoughtful, which is why we love serving them at bridal showers, baby showers, office breakfasts, and relaxed brunch gatherings.
Wishing You a Beautiful Week
