5 Hosting Mistakes We See All the Time (+ We've Made ALL these ourselves too!)
Share
Let's start with this...
Hosting is supposed to be fun.
It's not about having a Pinterest-perfect house or folding napkins into little swans. It's about getting your favorite people in one room.
That said... after catering hundreds of events, we've noticed a few mistakes that pop up over and over again.
The good news?
They're all super easy to fix.
1. Not Ordering Enough Food
Nothing stresses a host out faster than wondering if everyone is going to get enough to eat.
Our rule?
Always order a little more than you think you'll need.
Worst case? You have leftovers.
Best case? Your guests leave happy, and you're not secretly counting crackers halfway through the party.
We'll take leftovers over hungry guests every single time.
2. Trying to Make Everything Yourself
We get it.
You found 17 recipes on Pinterest and suddenly convinced yourself you're opening a restaurant for one afternoon.
Trust us...
Your guests would much rather spend time with you than watch you disappear into the kitchen every fifteen minutes.
Order dessert.
Grab a catering tray.
Buy the bread.
Give yourself permission to actually enjoy your own party.
3. Be the First Person to Grab a Plate
Okay... can we talk about this weird little hosting phenomenon?
No one wants to be the first person to grab food.
Everyone kind of stands around pretending they aren't hungry, waiting for someone else to make the first move.
So here's our favorite hosting trick...
Be the first person to grab a plate.
Seriously.
Walk over, make yourself a little snack, and suddenly everyone else realizes, "Oh... we're eating now!"
It's like you've officially opened the buffet without making an announcement.
My go-to line is always:
"I've been running around all day and haven't eaten a thing!"
Every. Single. Time.
People laugh, grab a plate, and suddenly the party gets moving.
It sounds silly, but it works almost every time.
4. Create a Menu That Makes Sense Together
One of my favorite things is when a meal tells a story.
Instead of serving a bunch of random dishes, think about how everything flows together.
One of our favorite recent events had a chips and salsa bar during cocktail hour that rolled right into a cantina-inspired taco dinner.
It felt intentional.
The whole evening flowed naturally, and guests noticed.
A cohesive menu doesn't have to be fancy—it just makes the whole experience feel like someone really thought it through.
Those are the little details people remember.
5. Thinking Everything Has to Be Perfect
Can we let you in on a little secret?
Your guests aren't paying nearly as much attention as you think they are.
They won't notice that one candle burned out.
They won't care that you used store-bought cookies.
They definitely aren't counting crackers on the charcuterie board.
They're there because they want to spend time with you.
And hey... if someone is walking around critiquing your party...
Maybe they don't get an invite next time. 😂
Hosting isn't about perfection.
It's about making people feel welcome.
So light the candle.
Open the wine.
Grab the first plate.
And enjoy your own party.
Because if you're having fun, chances are your guests are too.
At the end of the day, no one remembers whether the napkins matched the flowers or if every cracker was perfectly lined up.
They remember laughing around the table.
They remember great conversations.
They remember feeling welcome.
If your guests leave saying, "That was such a fun night," you absolutely nailed it.
Anyway... that's my two cents from the Butter kitchen. 💕
Until next time—happy hosting. 🤍
